Celebrating 20 years
No, I’m not 20 years old (those days are gone looooong ago…), exactly on July 14th 2006 I started this blog.
And you know what? I’m pretty proud of it, I never ever ever imagined It could last for so many years.
During my twenties I worked as a videogame reviewer and with a bunch of friends we created RPGPlayer.it, which was the best Italian site on computer role playing games. Soon we started to have some success and we became part of Multiplayer Network, one of the biggest Italian networks on videogames.
I really enjoyed It and It made it possible for me to interview also some big names of the PC videogame industry, but sadly like all the beautiful things It can’t last forever, and after several years I ended my collaboration.
But regardless this I still wanted to play, review and write, so I though “Why not open a blog and publish my own reviews?”, this is how this blog started.
Obviously many other topics started to pop on my mind, as soon I got my first flat rate internet connection I setup my first home server on a VIA Epia mini-ITX board (used previously on an advertising kiosk at work) and this became another interesting topic (and one of my most viewed ones), then came my experience with mmorpg games like Lotro and Eve Online, then my bike and in the middle hundreds of other topics and ideas.
Then after many years I started to think that maybe this blog could also be a nice place to put solutions on problems I encountered daily at work, or configuring my own services at home, and I started to write about them.
But at that point I thought that maybe writing in my own language (italian) could be a problem for people from other countries to make use of my suggestions and posts, so I decided to switch to english.
In the meantime I moved from shared hosting services to VPS and back to shared hosting several times, I suffered a small downtime during a fire accident in one of the OVH datacenters in France because my VPS was exactly in that datacenter (but I recovered swiftly thanks to my backups and I continued using OVH VPS services for several years) and then I moved to self hosting this blog on my own infrastructure elsewhere.
I started with WordPress when this php cms was almost ignored, I thought to change to a static site generator many times but honestly It works so well for me that I don’t see any reason to change.
Same for the site theme, I know it’s not top notch, it’s old, it’s not responsive and it’s barely readable on today’s big resolution screens (but works very well if you zoom a little bit :D ) but honestly I don’t give a damn about it, I never really cared about aesthetics or design and I don’t think I’ll start today to change this.
What else can I say? Well I hope to be able to celebrate another anniversary in 2046, for now stay tuned!
